Tea Profile
Pu Erh tea is a variety of fermented dark tea produced in Yunnan province. The two main classifications of Pu Erh are green and dark, or oxidized Pu Erh. The ‘tuo cha’, meaning compressed tea, was developed in early China trade because the teas were bulky and hard to transport. Tea was compressed to compact the leaf reducing the size of the loads for long journeys.
Origin
Yunnan is often considered a mecca for tea in China. Because of the ideal growing conditions for tea in the mountains of southern and western Yunnan Province, teas have been produced and grown there for centuries. The rich landscape and fertile soil, watered by the Lancang river that flows through the tea districts create a near-perfect mix of conditions and environmental factors that produces the most wonderful and exciting taste and flavor profile of Pu Erh. All types of Pu Erh tea are created from a large and broad leaf type of mostly unoxidized green tea. Pu Erh leaves are picked as one bud and 3-4 leaves whilst green tea is picked as one bud and 1-2 leaves. This means that older leaves contribute to the distinct taste flavor of Pu Erh tea.
